"Musical Interval"

$ 700
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 65 cm x 85 cm

Musical Interval is a pictorial presentation of music, inspired by the fast and melodic sounds which often accompany Ukrainian folk dances, in particular, Hopak*. But there is nothing common about this painting, as it does not contain any of the traditional or ethnic symbolism. The connection, however, is made purely on a spiritual level and it becomes more vivid when one listens to the music composed for the Hopak. The painting itself is a bridge between new and old worlds; it is a testament to how modern style and its influence on life can accentuate and reveal often forgotten traditional and cultural ways. Similar ideas I further explore in the painting called, Banduras in Paris.

"Cover Page"

This is my first ever design of the cover page for a book. Author of this book, who fought against the Nazi Germany and the Soviet occupants in WWII, had asked me to design a cover page that would reflect activities of his early life, which he had recorded in this book. The name of the author is Mykola Karpiy and he had written his memoirs in Ukrainian. Hence, all titles are in Ukrainian, too. Cover shows compass needle pointing to the east, where Mykola had been recruiting fighters to fight Nazis, Polish collaborators and Bolsheviks. I have used lines and images that are native to Ukraine and date all the way back to the Trypylian Culture (Bronze Age) to depict that needle. Overall, I think it captures action and eagerness that one associates with war well. Mykola Karpiy is very happy with the cover.

"Banduras in Paris"

Sold
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 90 cm x 60 cm

Just like the Musical Interval, this painting, Banduras* in Paris, explores a theme of music and movement in combination with modernity and tradition. The aim of this painting is to embrace the Old and the New in an original fashion that belongs to the 21st Centuary.

"Ralf"

Irish Setter (Ralf) - Impression
Not for Sale
Medium: Oil on Panel
Size: 40 cm x 58 cm

This is by far one of my favorite paintings. In best traditions of impressionism, it vividly captures light, color and various tones.
This painting had been painted outside, in front of a playing dog. After observing him for hours, I used a pre-made palette to quickly paint the fleeting effects of light. Bold brush work and alternating light effects successfully capture the happy nature of a dog.

Memory, Respect

Flyer/Card

This is a flyer that I have created using Photoshop on the request of the League of Ukrainian Canadians, a Toronto based organization that has used it to promote its exhibit on the abuse of human rights by the Soviet Union in Ukraine. The exhibit took place in the Toronto City Hall Rotunda.
